Samsun Grand Prix 2016, Turkey PREVIEW

The fourth edition of the Samsun Grand Prix is about to start in the metropolis on the north coast of Turkey. The next three days (April 1-3) therefore will bring strong emotions and world-class judo.

This is already the fifth major event of the year (4 Grand Prix and 1 Grand Slam), exactly one week after the 2016 Tbilisi Grand Prix, which took place in Georgia last weekend. The end of the Olympic qualification is rapidly approaching, as recalled by Mr. Vladimir Barta, the IJF Head Sports Director: "Every point is now counting for the Olympic qualification. Within a few weeks, we will know the exact list of the Rio Games participants. Some athlete’s already have the guarantee to participate in the Olympics, this is not the case for everyone. Thus, this Grand Prix is very significant for all delegations: for some to confirm their already good performances and for the others to win the points that will make the difference. »

The official draw of the competition was held today at the Anemon Hotel, in front of the representatives of the 67 engaged nations, representing almost 400 judoka (398).

Mr. Mohamed Meridja, IJF Education and Coaching Director, made the official speech: “Dear judo friends, dear IJF Executive Committee members, dear judo family, Ladies and Gentlemen; on behalf of the IJF and its President, Mr. Marius Vizer, I would like to express my warmest welcome to all the delegations. The IJF is really satisfied with the development of judo in Turkey and by the hard work of the Turkish Judo Federation. Your athletes have already achieved really good results. I wish good luck to everyone.“

Mr. Fatih Uysal, President of the Turkish Judo Federation, addressed the heads of delegation: "Dear IJF representatives, dear media, dear federations, judoka and coaches, I am happy to welcome you here in Samsun for the fourth edition of our event. With your participation, I am convinced that, once again, it will be a successful Grand Prix. I wish all the best to all of your athletes and I wish to welcome you again in Samsun many times. "

During the following press conference, Mr. Fatih Uysal added: “We hope that it’s going to be a nice and fair organisation. As I said, we hope to see you in Samsun in the upcoming years too as we are planning on organising more events. But before that, I really wish that this year we will have a good organisation. For several years (since 2013), Samsun has been hosting the Grand Prix, which is a very important event on the IJF World Judo Tour. The city is all ready for the competition and we have a great sports hall here. This really shows how Samsun gives importance to this organisation. This edition of the Samsun Grand Prix will have a special meaning as we are close to Rio 2016 and to the end of the qualification process. We hope that the Turkish team and our judoka will have a chance to win medals and crucial points. Thank you very much to all the people who contributed to realise this big event in Samsun.“

Mr. Fatih Uysal

Mr. Güven Özyurt, Samsun Sport Director, said: “We are here for another edition of the Samsun Grand Prix. We are glad to have this kind of prestigious event in our city, Samsun. We are thankful to the Turkish Judo Federation and to the International Judo Federation for hosting this event here. It is a very nice feeling to have this competition already for the fourth time. We are working hard and producing a huge effort to host this tournament without any problem. Thank you to the IJF President, Mr. Marius Vizer and his team for trusting us in this issue. I wish good success to all judoka.“

During the draw Mr. Jan Snijders, IJF Head Refereeing Director, once again emphasized the importance of producing good, beautiful and spectacular judo for all the athletes: “What is important is the grip. With a good grip you can really do judo and if your athletes stay at the centre of the competition area, they will for sure have more chances to win.“

During the press conference: Mr. Güven Özyurt (far left) - Mr. Daniel Lascau (center) - Mr. Fatih Uysal (far right)

During the press conference, Mr Daniel Lascau, IJF Sport Director said: “Dear Mr. President of the Turkish Judo Federation, dear Mr. Director of Sports of the city of Samsun, dear media representatives, thank you once again for coming to this prestigious event. The efforts of the federation and from all the organisers offers us the possibility to come here for the fourth time. Almost 70 countries, and 400 athletes, this shows us the quality of this competition. The IJF is very happy to have such a strong partner as the Turkish Judo Federation. Here we are going to see athletes who will fight for medals in Rio. But right now the TJF is already preparing the future generation that will compete in Tokyo 2020. A lot of efforts are done by the Judo Federation and the government to build that new generation.“
