Havana Grand Prix 2016 - PREVIEW

(Via IJF)

JUDO IS A BRIDGE: IT BRINGS FRIENDSHIP, PEACE, SOLIDARITY AND UNITY

The official draw of the first event of the 2016 season took place today at the Melia Habana hotel. In fact the Havana Grand Prix 2016 in Cuba will be the kick-off of an important year of competition as all eyes are now looking towards the Rio Olympics. 293 competitors from 66 nations will be present during the next three days on the tatami of the Sport City Coliseum.

All the heads of delegation were present during the draw and were welcomed by the IJF President, Mr. Marius Vizer: “Dear guests and colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, it is an honour for us to see all of you here in Havana, Cuba for an important event. Judo is present throughout the world, on all five continents and in almost 200 countries. Our sport is a perfect illustration of what sport can bring to the society. It shows unity and solidarity and it is evidence for us to come here and to support the Cuban Judo Federation. Judo in Cuba has a long history and I am convinced that we will have a fantastic competition. Before we proceed to the draw, let me also introduce you with Ms. Nadia Comaneci, former Olympic champion and a true legend of sports.“

Ms. Nadia Comaneci then took the floor: “Thank you Mr. Vizer and thank you to all of you for welcoming me within your judo family. I am a fan of judo, which shows so many important values. Tomorrow I will also have the opportunity to visit the gymnastic academy in Cuba and I am really happy about it. I do hope that other sports will also follow the steps of judo and come to this beautiful country. I am really looking forward to following the competition during the next three days.“

Mr. Vizer also introduced to the audience, tennis legend, Mr. Ion Tiriac, who declared: “Judo has a great potential and I don’t see many other sports with such a great future. Thanks to Mr. Vizer and his team, judo has tremendously and positively changed over the past years. I don’t see any other activity than sports to progress in life. I am really happy to be here with all of you today in Cuba. Thank you very much and good luck to all of you and all of your athletes.“

Before giving the floor to the President of the national federation, Mr. Vizer added: “Judo is a bridge. It brings friendship, peace, solidarity and unity to where it goes. Coming to Cuba with such a big event, to kick-off our sports season, is challenging, but thanks to the hard work of everyone, we will be able to deliver a fantastic event.“

Mr. Rafael Reyes Manso, President of the Cuban Judo Federation said: “Thank you so much to the IJF and its President, Mr. Marius Vizer for coming to our country. Judo has been developing so much over the past years and it is also the case in our country. We have received a lot of support from the IJF to organise this event and to develop judo in all sectors. This second edition of the Grand Prix will also help the development our sport in the whole region and throughout the world. We are proud to be part of that development. We are looking forward to seeing all of you throughout the weekend.“

Mr. Roberto Leon Richards, Senior Vice-President of INDER said: “On behalf of the Cuban people and Cuban sports and Olympic movement, it is my pleasure to welcome all of you in Cuba. We are very proud to have you here and to see all these sports legends also attending the Judo Grand Prix. This means a lot to us. We want to share our values for the benefit of the youth from Cuba and from the World.“

The next three days of competition will feature some of the best athletes in the world. In the women’s -48kg division all eyes will look at the comeback to competition of Paula Pareto (ARG), who won the last edition of the World Championships in Astana, in August. In the same category, the current Olympic champion, Sarah Menezes from Brazil, will try to show that she is still a serious contender for the Olympic title in her home country next summer. The -52 and -57kg categories are quite open and many athletes have the potential to climb in the podium. In -63kg, Yarden Gerbi (ISR), World champion in 2013, probably remembers that it was already in Rio. Is it a sign for her and for the next summer big event? She will try to get some precious points to keep a good ranking position. The -70kg category, once again is very open and an accurate prediction of who will be the winner is complicated to draw. In -78kg, the world number one and current Olympic Champion, Kayla Harrison, from the United States, will definitely be the ultimate favorite, when the public will definitely sheer for their home star, ORTIZ Idalys (CUB), in the last women’s division.

In the men’s division, the Azerbaijani delegation is composed of its best athletes, like SAFAROV Orkhan (-60kg) and world number ones ORUJOV Rustam (-73) and GASIMOV Elmar (-100), without forgetting the 2013 World Champion, MAMMADOV Elkhan in -100kg as well. In -66kg, the top seeded athlete being Loïc Korval (FRA), ranked 10th at the World Ranking list, there will probably be some changes at the top of the ranking after the competition. In the absence of the top athletes in the world, the -81kg division will show some very interesting fights to discover who can become a good and strong outsider for the Rio Olympic Games. The -90kg will be one of the most followed competition here in Cuba as 2013 World Champion from Cuba, Asley GONZALEZ, will be on the tatami in front of his public. TOTH Krisztian from Hungary will try to come back to his best level, when he became World silver medallist two years ago in Chelyabinsk. In -100kg, beside GASIMOV Elmar, it will be very interesting to follow the competition of the two Germans, Karl-Richard FREY and Dimitri PETERS, respectively ranked 5 and 6 in the world, who have not decided yet who will go to the Olympics, while Toma NIKIFOROV (BEL) comes back to competition after an operation at the end of the last season. Finally, in the last category of the tournament, several athletes have the potential ro reach the podium in the absence of the king Tenny Riner (FRA), who will be back in Paris at the beginning of February.
