(Via IJF)

Qingdao will showcase the seventh edition of the Qingdao Grand Prix this weekend. Held in the Qingdao Guoxin Stadium (Diamond Hall), the competition will gather together 379 athletes from 59 nations and will attribute points for the Olympic Qualification (gold: 300 points - silver: 180 points - bronze: 120 points - 5th: 60 points - 7th: 48 points - 1/16: 36 points - 1/32: 24 points - 1st fight won: 12 points - participation: 2 points).

Lying across the Shandong Peninsula and looking out to the Yellow Sea, Qingdao is the largest municipality in the eastern Shandong Province on the east coast of China and is well known as a major seaport, naval base, and industrial centre. In 2007, Qingdao was named as among China's top ten cities by the Chinese Cities Brand Value Report and in 2009, and was named China's most livable city by the Chinese Institute of City Competitiveness.

The official draw of the competition took place today at the competition venue. Naser Al Tamimi, the IJF General treasurer, addressed his welcoming message to the coaches and representatives of the 59 delegations: “Dear Mr. Vice President, Dear Mr. Director, dear coaches, colleagues, referees and dear judoka. It is my pleasure in the name of our President, Mr. Marius Vizer, to welcome you in Qingdao for the seventh edition of the Judo Grand Prix. I thank the Chinese Judo Association and everyone who was involved in the organization of this event and I wish all the best and good luck to all the participants.“

Mr. Song Aijun, Director of Qingdao Administration Center of Sports Competitions, said: “The Qingdao Grand Prix, which is an event of the IJF World Judo Tour, has been organized by the Chinese Judo Association, with the support of the Shandong Provincial Sports Bureau, the Qingdao Administration Center of Sports Competition and the Qingdao Judo Association. The Qingdao municipal government attached much importance on the preparation of the 2015 edition of the Grand Prix. This gives us the opportunity to present the development of sport and economy in our city. We will do our best to make it a top-level celebration of Chinese judo. The TV signal will be provided by CCTV and will be globally broadcasted. Thank you very much to the IJF for their trust in our professional capacities to organize such an important event. The 2016 Rio Olympic Games are getting closer and only the athletes with enough points will be able to participate in the Games. Thus, our Grand Prix has attracted a lot of top players. I wish good luck to all participants.“

Mr. Fengshan Xiong, Vice President of the Chinese Judo Association, declared: “In this beautiful autumn season, we are delighted to welcome you for the 2015 edition of the Judo Grand Prix in Qingdao. This city started to organize international Judo event in 2001. After years of development, the event was upgraded to a Grand Prix by the IJF. Judo has improved and become more and more popular in China. The development and advancement of judo in our country has always received great support and concerns from the International Judo Federation. On behalf of the Chinese Judo Association, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to President Marius Vizer and to the IJF for the long-term support.“

Mr. Fengshan Xiong then added: “I believe that this event will not only improve the Chinese judo level, but it will also benefit to the friendship between all countries and regions, and also provide a better platform for the judoka around the world to accumulate experience in international competitions and to improve their techniques. Finally, I sincerely wish all the teams a great performance during the Grand Prix. I wish you all a pleasant stay in Qingdao.“

Mr. Vladimir Barta, the IJF Head Sports Director, then conducted the technical part of the draw and presented the statistics which include a total number of 379 athletes from 59 countries (237 men and 142 women), several world and Olympic champions being present in the Shandong province to collect more points for the Olympic qualification.

After the draw and for the very first time, the referee meeting gathered together not only the referees, but also all the coaches, who are present in Qingdao. During one hour, all refereeing rules were detailed. Mr. Barta explained: “This is an important process and step forward. The coaches were already actively involved in the past, but we decided to reinforce that aspect so everybody clearly understand everything.“
Mr. Ezio Gamba, who was representing the coaches, took himself the floor to explain all the rules to his colleagues and said: “Everyone of us has his/her own mission and they are different by nature. But to be a referee is never an easy job. We must know that decisions must be taken within a second and that the rules have to be strictly applied.“

Bernd Achilles, the IJF refereeing director said: “As referees, we are doing everything possible to make sure that the rules are applied and followed. Our mission is to always have the right winner stepping out of the tatami. I must emphasize the very good behavior of the coaches throughout the year and I am really pleased to see that they are all present today on the occasion of that important meeting. This is important to create the adequate atmosphere to work in good conditions.“ According to all the positive comments at the end of the session, this kind of meetings gathering coaches and the referees will be regularly organized.
