Continuous action ippon or stepping out shido?

One of the most confusing aspects of judo rules concern the edge of the contest area. Many judo players, including top competitors have gotten caught for stepping outside. But are there exceptions when stepping outside is ok?

Perhaps.

Perhaps not.

The IJF Referee Commission seems to think there could be exceptions but many people disagree and say if you want to have rules, it's better to stick to the rules. Alexander Iastkevitch, Ezio Gamba and Daniel Lascau all believe that if stepping outside is shido, then it must be shido in all cases.
