Judo Grand Slam, Abu Dhabi 2014 Official Draw - PREVIEW

(Via IJF)

This weekend, the IJF World Judo Tour is making a stop in Abu Dhabi, the capital and the second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and also capital of the largest of the UAE's seven member emirates. With approximately 1 million inhabitants, the city is today the country's center of political and industrial activities, and a major cultural and commercial centre.

After five successful editions of the IJF Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi will host this year its first Grand Slam, joining the club of the Grand Slam organizers together with Paris, Baku, Tyumen and Tokyo, which will be the last event of 2014 in December.

The event will allocate points for the Olympic qualification, Rio 2016. The official draw of the competition was held today at the brand new FGB Arena, which will feature 322 athletes. The draw took place in the presence of IJF and UAE Judo Federation officials and in front of the representatives of the 59 delegations engaged in the tournament.

Mr. Mohamed Meridja, the IJF Education and Coaching Director, welcomed all the delegates: "On behalf of the IJF President, Mr. Marius Vizer, it is an honor for me to welcome you all in Abu Dhabi to what has become a Grand Slam, after five editions of the Grand Prix. This week, on October 28th, the IJF celebrated the World Judo Day and particularly underlined ‘HONOR’ as one of the major values of our sport. We are now collating all the information and we will publish them very soon. This weekend, we will celebrate the best athletes in the world, who will compete for the Grand Slam title. I wish them good luck."

On behalf of H.E. Mohammed Bin Tha’aloob Al Dirai, President of the UAE Judo Federation, Mr. Nasser Al Tamimi, IJF General Treasurer said: "Welcome to Abu Dhabi. I hope that you will enjoy your stay during the next three days. Enjoy our city and its atmosphere. We are at your entire disposal to support you."

Mr. Al Tamimi also explained: "Our Grand Prix became a Grand Slam. It gives more credit to the development of judo in this country. Judo already had a very good image in the UAE and this positive image will be even stronger now. It will bring more people to our dojos. Of course, it puts also more responsibilities on our shoulders, but we are ready for that. We want to offer a real Grand Slam standard. It is a challenge, since we are now organizing an event, which has the same scale as the Paris or the Tokyo Tournaments. It will help us to become better and better."

Concerning the venue, Mr. Al Tamimi declared: "This sports facility is brand new. We were waiting for it at least for two years. We are really lucky that we can use it for this first Grand Slam. Thank you to the IJF for giving us the opportunity to be among the strong judo nations."

Rainer Schueler, General Manager of the FGB Arena added: “We are thrilled to be hosting the IPIC Judo Grand Slam in our Arena. Such an event enhances the commitment to the development of Martial Arts and overall sports in Abu Dhabi, and we are delighted to be the home of such an exciting initiative that highlights the trust in which the UAE Wrestling, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu & kickboxing Federation has in our facilities. FGB Arena, which opened its doors to the public in February 2014, is a new facility for sport, entertainment, corporate and social events located in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi. Built with the needs of the community in mind, the 6,000 capacity indoor arena provides an event experience like no other, year round."

Mr. Vladimir Barta, the IJF Head Sport Director, who conducted the official draw of the Grand Slam said: "The country is strongly supporting the development of sports and especially of judo. They obtained their first medals on the occasion of the World Judo Championships, Chelyabinsk 2014. It shows that the UAE are now strong in Judo but also in organizing major international judo events."
